Equine Dentistry
Equine Dentistry is an integral portion of our practice at SMVS. All of our equine doctors provide dentistry services. Rather than simply "floating" your horses teeth (which involves reducing the sharp points on the cheek teeth), every horse undergoing a dental has a thorough oral exam performed to identify any disorder of the teeth, mouth or tongue. Each tooth and the surrounding gingiva (gum) is inspected for disease, as well as the "balance" or symmetry of your horses dentition. Disease and problems in the mouth may manifest in a myriad of ways, including difficulty eating, discomfort with a bit while riding, a runny nose with a bad smell (a sinusitis/tooth root abscess) or weight loss.
In addition to a complete oral exam, we often utilize digital radiography (X-rays), to identify any problem tooth roots, sinuses, or other bony problems with the jaws and teeth. We use current motorized instruments for all procedures and require a source of electricity to perform dentals at the farm. Our doctors strive to perform premier dentistry on every horse, and frequently attend continuing education on advanced equine dentistry. Dr. O'Connor has pursued multiple avenues of specializing in equine dentistry. We are happy to assist you and your horse in any fashion regarding dentistry, so feel free to give us a call!
